About Our School

History

Almaden Parents’ Pre-school was founded in 1969 by a group of parents in south San Jose who wanted to participate in their children’s early childhood education. They formulated a philosophy that was based on sequential intellectual (or cognitive) development.

The parents wanted to be present with their children and witness their growth and new discoveries, and used a co-op preschool model. Together, parents and teachers would create an environment that would be happy, safe, and secure so that the children could grow physically, emotionally, socially and intellectually.

The school opened in September 1969 at its present location with 72 member families. APPS continues to develop the whole child through the dedication of its teachers and the active participation of parents.

Associations and Structure
California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools

The California Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools (CCPPNS) is a state-wide community of parents and educators committed to teaching and inspiring families through parent involvement and mutual support. APPS belongs to the Santa Clara Valley Council of Parent Participation Nursery Schools (SCVC), which is the Silicon Valley branch of the statewide organization.

APPS is one of 26 schools worldwide that have been accepted into the Positive Discipline Association’s Lab School Program. This selection is renewed yearly and recognized at the end of the school year.

Schools are evaluated based on the length of their whole-school implementation, percentage of staff trained in Positive Discipline and the depth of their practices in the classroom and community. When you enroll at APPS you get the benefit of regular parent education from our teachers and Positive Discipline coach, and have ongoing support from members of our school community who are constantly striving toward a culture of belonging, significance and mutual respect.
